Practical Information

DTS at YWAM Skjærgårdsheimen!

We have had DTS’s at this base for many years, but 2008 was the first year we opened the school for international students to attend. Now we have a bilingual DTS! That has been a blessing the last years! Approx 2/5 of the students are international. The rest are Norwegians.

Skjærgårdsheimen:

The Skjærgårdsheimen base is on the idyllic island of Flekkerøy, 13 km southwest from the city Kristiansand. The base has a beautiful view of the sea, and is a 10-minute walk from the grocery store and bus stop. The island of Flekkerøy has amazing nature and hiking opportunities. You can look at pictures from Flekkerøy/Skjærgårdsheimen

Next school:

Next school starts in September 2017 and lasts until the middle of March 2018.

There will be no school during the Christmas holiday, from December 17, 2017 until January 2, 2018. Most of the students travel home in the Christmas break.

School days:

On Monday to Fridays, the school day lasts from 8 am to 4 pm. We start the day with time alone with God before we gather for worship, prayer or teaching. From 10 am to 2 pm we have teaching, but the time varies from day to day. After the teaching we have small groups, practical work, mentoring sessions or focus track.

The evenings vary a bit from day to day and from week to week. On Mondays, the classroom is available for studying, and other evenings are reserved for ministry, studying, and of course, social fellowship. You can expect to have outreach team gatherings a few times throughout the fall, to prepare for outreach and get to know your team. In addition, there will be some evenings with other practical work or in-town ministry. We partner with some amazing churches and ministries in Kristiansand, and you will have the opportunity to join some youth groups and local outreach during the DTS. Once a month, we also host an “open meeting” at the base, with worship and teaching.

Application

You can apply for DTS using our online application.

 Apply DTS

If you need to apply for a visa to Norway, we should receive your application and have time to contact your reference person before May 1st to have enough time to process it and for you to apply for your visa. You can start to apply after January 1st. Feel free to contact us to find out whether you need a visa or not. If you do, we will help you with the process and tell you how you can do it best.

We have some guidelines which we use when we consider a DTS application from a “non-Western” country:

Even if the applicant does not meet these criteria, we still pray about the application and ask God to show us what His will is. So, everyone is welcome to apply no matter what country you are from!

Finance:

Price for lecture phase: NOK 24.400,- (approx. 2900 USD / 2500 EURO )

Price for outreach: NOK 19.500,- (approx. 2300 USD / 2050 EURO)

TOTAL COST: NOK 43.900,- (approx. 5300 USD / 4600 EURO)

The prices above only apply to the mission and counseling track. Price for leadership track is beneath:
Leadership track costs 48,900,- NOK, and lasts 9 months, contra 6 months for the other tracks.

The exchange rates are changing all the time, so you will need to double check these prices! The school fees are paid in NOK, not USD or EURO.

The school fee covers food and housing, teaching, air-tickets for outreach and travelling inside the outreach country. Personal emergency travel insurance, vaccinations and visa for outreach is not included in the school fee. So you need to add on about 3000 NOK for these costs too.

If you need a Norwegian visa to come here, you need to pay half of the school fee before we start the visa application process. If you are allowed to enter Norway without visa for three months, you only need to pay the registration fee before we can start your visa application.

Rooming:

All our students live in the dorm in the 2nd and 3rd floor of the main building. These are double rooms, each with it’s own sink. Many of the rooms are newly decorated and have a beautiful view over the sea. There are toilets and showers in each hallway.

Weather:

September – December are considered the autumn months in Norway, that means the climate will become colder and colder. The outside temperature will be about 10 – 15 degrees Celsius (about 50 – 60 degrees Fahrenheit) the first month, and in October to December the temperature will be about 0-10 degrees Celsius. There can also be a lot of rain during this season! Bring warm clothes, a good jacket and warm shoes. It is good to pack for layering.

Part time student

If you live nearby the base and have responsibilities at home, it is still possible to join the DTS as a part-time student.

Because most of the “locals” in Kristiansand and Flekkerøy are Norwegian, most of the information about becoming a part-time student is in Norwegian. If you are interested, please contact us.
